The Truth about Hypnosis

Is Hypnosis Evil?

It is completely understandable to wonder if hypnosis is “evil,” especially if you grew up hearing confusing or fearful messages about it. Many people only know hypnosis from movies, stage shows, or old stories that make it seem strange or unsafe. Real hypnosis is much simpler, calmer, and more grounded than that.

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused relaxation. You have likely experienced something similar when you were deeply focused on a good book, driving a familiar route, praying, meditating, listening to music, or daydreaming. Your mind becomes calm, your body relaxes, and your attention turns inward.

In a guided hypnosis or meditation session, you are not giving up your power. You are not being controlled. You are not asleep. You are aware, present, and able to stop at any time. The practitioner simply guides you into a relaxed state so you can listen to yourself more clearly.

The purpose of this work is not to take anything from you. It is to help you reconnect with your own wisdom, peace, imagination, and inner strength. Some people use hypnosis to release stress, build confidence, change unwanted habits, process emotions, or feel more connected to themselves.

Think of hypnosis like quieting the noise in your mind so your heart can speak. It is not about someone else having power over you. It is about you becoming more aware of the thoughts, beliefs, and patterns that may be shaping your life.

For people of faith, hypnosis can also be understood as a form of deep reflection, similar to guided prayer, meditation, or intentional rest. You are welcome to bring your own beliefs, values, and spiritual boundaries into the process. A safe practitioner will always respect that.

Hypnosis is not a replacement for medical care, therapy, or spiritual counsel. It is a supportive practice that can work alongside your existing wellness tools.

Most importantly, you are always in control. You choose what you share, what you explore, and what feels right for you. A good session should feel safe, respectful, and empowering.

Hypnosis is not about fear. It is about focus, relaxation, and self-awareness. At its heart, it is a practice of remembering that your mind, body, and spirit already carry wisdom within them.

Why do People Lose Control on Stage?

Stage hypnosis is usually what makes people nervous, and honestly, I get it. It can look like someone is being “taken over,” but that is not what is actually happening. Stage hypnosis is entertainment. It is designed to be dramatic, funny, and exaggerated for an audience. The people who participate are usually volunteers who are comfortable being playful in public, open to suggestion, and willing to go along with the experience.

Even in a stage show, a person is not being controlled against their will. They are still making choices, even if they are deeply relaxed, highly focused, or caught up in the fun of the moment. Hypnosis does not give someone magical power over another person. It works with attention, imagination, expectation, and willingness.

A stage hypnotist’s goal is to entertain. A healing-centered hypnosis or guided meditation practitioner has a very different goal: to create safety, calm, self-awareness, and personal empowerment.

In a supportive session, there is no pressure to perform, act silly, reveal private information, or do anything that does not feel aligned. You remain aware. You remain in control. You can pause, speak, shift, or stop at any time.

So, when people ask, “What about the stage show stuff?” the simplest answer is this: stage hypnosis is performance, not the full picture of what hypnosis is. Real therapeutic or reflective hypnosis is quiet, respectful, collaborative, and centered on your well-being.

I'm Christian. Is Hypnosis Spiritually Safe for Me?

Absolutely, and this is such a valid question! For many Christians, the concern is not about relaxation itself, but about whether the practice honors their faith, free will, and relationship with God. For Christians who are curious about hypnosis, it is natural to pause and ask, “Is this spiritually safe for me?” That question deserves respect, not dismissal.

Hypnosis, when practiced ethically, is not about giving your mind or spirit over to another person. It is a focused state of relaxation where you remain aware, in control, and able to stop at any time. You are not being controlled. You are not being asked to believe anything that conflicts with your faith. You are simply being guided into a calm, reflective state where you can focus on healing, clarity, and self-awareness.

Many Christians already practice forms of focused reflection, such as prayer, worship, quiet time, Scripture meditation, breath prayer, or stillness before God. Hypnosis can be understood in a similar way when it is approached with clear spiritual boundaries: a guided process that helps quiet the mind and settle the body so you can listen more deeply.

A Christian-centered or faith-respectful hypnosis session should never ask you to surrender your beliefs, invite in anything that feels spiritually uncomfortable, or go against your conscience. Your faith can remain fully present in the process. You may choose to focus on peace, healing, forgiveness, courage, self-control, or renewing your mind in ways that align with your relationship with God.

You are always allowed to set boundaries. You can ask that the session include prayerful language, Scripture-based affirmations, or references to God’s love and guidance. You can also ask to avoid any language, imagery, or practices that do not feel aligned with your faith.

Most importantly, hypnosis is not a replacement for prayer, pastoral guidance, therapy, or medical care. It is a supportive wellness practice that can help with relaxation, emotional awareness, confidence, habit change, and stress relief.

So, is hypnosis spiritually safe for Christians? It can be, when it is practiced ethically, respectfully, and in alignment with your faith and personal convictions. You remain in control, your beliefs are honored, and nothing should ever be forced on you.

A good practitioner will not ask you to leave your faith at the door. They will honor it as part of who you are.

10 Examples of how the Words of Yeshua (Jesus) Inform My Practice

1. “The kingdom of God is within you.” – Luke 17:21

My Coaching Translation:

“Everything you need is already inside you.”

This aligns deeply with my framework of self-trust, inner wisdom, and guiding clients toward their internal compass. This is an invitation to self-empowerment, reminding them they are not broken or empty—they are sacred and whole.

2. “Do you want to be made well?” – John 5:6

My Coaching Translation:

“Are you ready to step into your healing?”

This question invites readiness and self-agency. It supports my role as a facilitator of transformation, allowing my clients to take the lead in their own healing journey.

 3. “Let the little children come to me…” – Matthew 19:14

My Coaching Translation:

“Let your inner child be seen, heard, and loved.”

In my inner child work, this phrase can remind clients that their vulnerability is sacred. It gives permission to reconnect with play, innocence, creativity, and the parts of themselves that have been silenced.

4. “Your faith has made you well.” – Mark 5:34

My Coaching Translation:

“Your belief in your own power is transformative.”

This empowers clients to understand the role of mindset, intention, and belief in the healing process. In hypnosis, belief is everything—this echoes the idea that healing is not something done to them, but something awakened within them.

5. “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

My Coaching Translation:

“You are safe to rest here. You don’t have to carry this alone.”

This speaks directly to nervous system regulation and creating safety in the coaching container. It affirms the sacred pause and rest as resistance—so needed in a world that demands constant productivity.

6. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:32

My Coaching Translation:

“Radical honesty leads to liberation.”

This can be used to help my clients embrace their truth and questioning their internal narratives. It invites critical reflection and supports the core belief that naming our reality is the first step to transforming it.

7. “Peace, be still.” – Mark 4:39

My Coaching Translation:

“You have the power to calm the storm within.”

This affirms the ability to regulate, pause, and soothe the nervous system in the face of chaos or fear.

8. “I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” – John 10:10

My Coaching Translation:

“You are worthy of a full, expansive, joyful life.”

This phrase speaks to self-worth and the liberation journey. It affirms that healing is not just about surviving—it's about thriving in joy, purpose, and alignment.

9. “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” – Luke 23:34

My Coaching Translation:

“Releasing others from your pain is an act of freedom, not permission.”

For my work around inner child healing, forgiveness, and breaking cycles of harm, this reminds clients that forgiveness is for them, not for the absolution of the oppressor.

10. “With God, all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26

My Coaching Translation:

“You are limitless when aligned with divine purpose.”

This affirms the sacred potential in each of us. In a decolonized spiritual context, this reminds clients that their alignment with the Divine (in whatever form resonates) makes radical transformation possible.
